Biafo Hispar Trek | Overview
The Biafo Hispar Trek is one of the longest and most challenging glacier traverses in the world, linking Baltistan with the Hunza Valley through the mighty Hispar La (5,151m). This trek covers more than 120 km of continuous glacieracross the Biafo (63 km) and Hispar (49 km) glaciers — a unique adventure that few in the world ever experience.
Starting Point Of Baifo Hispar Trek:
Starting from the village of Askole in Baltistan, the trail follows the wild Biafo Glacier, winding through massive ice fields, moraine ridges, and dramatic snow-capped peaks. After days of trekking on crevassed ice, trekkers reach the windswept Snow Lake (Lukpe Lawo), a vast expanse of glacial snow that stretches endlessly to the horizon.
From Snow Lake, the journey continues towards the steep ascent of the Hispar La, a high-altitude mountain pass that connects the Biafo with the Hispar Glacier of Hunza. Crossing this pass is the most demanding section of the trek, offering jaw-dropping views of peaks such as Kunyang Chhish, Baintha Brakk (The Ogre), and Kanjut Sar.
The descent into the Hispar Valley of Hunza is equally dramatic, with trekkers navigating glacial rivers, ice towers, and rugged moraine landscapes. The trek finally ends in the green pastures and villages of Hunza, providing a sharp contrast to the icy wilderness left behind.
This is not an ordinary trek — it is a remote, expedition-style adventure that demands fitness, endurance, and resilience. The journey is strenuous but deeply rewarding, offering unmatched solitude, raw wilderness, and one of the greatest glacier traverses on Earth.
Best Time For Biafo Hispar Trek
The best time to undertake the Biafo Hispar Trek is from July to September, when weather conditions are most favorable and glaciers are accessible. Prior experience in high-altitude trekking is strongly recommended.
For adventurers seeking an extreme, once-in-a-lifetime Himalayan experience, the Biafo Hispar Trek is a journey into the heart of the Karakoram’s icy kingdom.
